It's so common in our culture to just skip over this little known fact, but the truth is that over time, unresolved childhood wounds, food trauma, and stress can create emotional eating patterns, feelings of shame, and a disconnection from our body's true needs.

Persistent cravings, binge eating, addictive behaviors, or other eating disorders often stem from childhood experiences (good or bad!)
If you were taught that food is a reward as a child, you'll be inclined to use food to reward yourself as an adult.Â
If you were taught to eat everything on your plate, even if you were already full, you may continue doing that as an adult without noticing it. (Or, if you're like me, maybe you only eat what you WANT instead of eating healthier.)

Let me tell you a little about me, and what inspired me to start this 21-Day Journey to Food Freedom!Â
This was me in 2020.
Even though I may have looked fine on the outside, on the inside I was falling apart. As a mother, wife, and healer, I was taking care of everyone else around me but ME. I was mentally, emotionally, and physically drained. I was 50 pounds overweight and the heaviest I'd ever been since giving birth to my twins. Â
At age 36, I got winded going up flights of stairs and had chronic back pain. I was in an unhealthy marriage, I sucked at setting boundaries, I was emotionally overeating, living a sedentary lifestyle, and regularly eating unhealthy fast foods.
Athough I tried to maintain appearances on the outside, on the inside I felt frustrated and helpless. I hated my body and often cried when I looked in the mirror. I'd tried a variety of failed workouts, fad dieting hadn't worked, and I was secretly depressed and on the verge of a mental breakdown. đ

Then I went to Thailand, and something inside of me shifted.
I had the opportunity to go to Thailand two years in a row to learn Thai Massage. I felt like the land and the energy there had cracked a tiny part of the shell of my protective egg, and soon, the whole shell cracked open.
My heart was open, and realized that something in me had changed. When I got back to the states, everything in my life was the same, but I was different. I knew that I needed to match my outside to my inside. A friend recommended I do a detox cleanse.Â
But I didn't know the first thing about detoxing or eating healthy. đ
I realized my past habits were still haunting me.
I grew up eating TV dinners, boxed hamburger helper, southern friend chicken, and canned green beans. I'd lived off Taco Bell, Burger King, McDonald's, Pizza Hut and all the typical American fast food places for most of my life.
So of course, it was still totally normal for me to eat that way. But I didn't understand the depth of WHY it was so normalized in my subconscious mind.Â
As a child I deeply craved love and attention. My mother, having left my father to avoid his abuse and alcoholism, was often gone working several jobs to make ends meet. So, I was often left alone to my own devices.
Being hungry was normal for me. At an early age, I learned to sneak food. I would sneak cookies from the cookie jar at my babysitters house. I would sneak candy from the dishes and anywhere else I could find it. I had little crinkly wrappers hidden in all the nooks and crannies of my room. I even stowed spoonfuls of peanut butter under my pillow. I was always hungry.
When I got older, I hated cooking, I hated "healthy" food, and even though I still occasionally ate my greens and salads, my taste buds were adapted to foods that made me feel good, like cookies, sweets, fatty foods, salty foods, and anything that was bad for me.Â
I especially craved sweets (and still do!) I love chocolate and all the sugary goodies. But, finally, I came to realize that this stems from my childhood. From the need to feel pleasure. To taste sweetness. To enjoy, if only for a few moments, something that brings happiness. To me, food was comforting.
And besides, I was now a busy mom with two teenagers and working two jobs. I thought I didn't have time to be healthy, work out, or eat right.
But, then I realized, that's the type of thinking that led me to my breaking point! đ¤Śââď¸

I'll share a little secret with you:
Sometimes when we're on the verge of a breakdown, we're actually on the verge of our greatest healing! đĽ°
One day I woke up and decided that I was done with living this way. I just couldn't take it anymore. I was tired of hating my body, tired of being in pain, and tired of the destructive loop I was in. I realized that I wasn't helpless. I had choices.Â
I knew I needed to do something different. I decided that I was going to get HEALTHY in body, mind, and spirit. Not just for myself, but for my inner child.
I decided to make a commitment to MYSELF because I always put everyone else first.
My old story was that I never had time for myself, working out, or making healthy meals. Â
So, I decided that I needed to write a new story. One where I was worthy of making time for my healing.Â
I began researching gut healing and detoxing, and spoke to other friends who had used cleansing as a way to reset their gut and take charge of their health.Â
I began to make the links between my bad eating habits and my childhood trauma surrounding food.Â
I knew that I needed to detox my life and address my old habits, or I'd NEVER get better, so IÂ started making small, achievable goals that focused on nurturing and supporting myself.Â
Then I started taking action and baby steps toward my goals. Over time, I gradually reduced the toxic load in my body, mind, and soul, and my inner child began to feel happy again. đĽ°
Investing in my health was the best decision I ever made.
Over the course of a year, I dropped 50 pounds (30 of which came off in the first 6 months!) I realized that what I needed was not just the removal of unhealthy foods, but unhealthy people, habits, and beliefs from my life.  Losing weight wasn't the goal- getting healthy was. Losing the physical weight was just a bonus side effect! Â
My business, relationships, boundary setting abilities, confidence, and mental health all improved, and my entire life got SO much better!Â
After doing making my health a priority and changing my relationship to food, I felt stronger, healthier, and happier. Many people almost didn't recogize me, and kept asking me what I'd done to make the change. They wanted to know what secrets and tips I had.
That's when I knew that if I could do it, I could help others do it too! đ
